Warts are small bumps on the skin that are usually harmless but unsightly. They are caused by a virus. There are different types of warts, and it is important to recognise them correctly before choosing the right treatment.
Common warts are hard and rough. They are often found on the fingers, elbows, knees or face.
Plantar warts (under the foot) and palmar warts (on the palm) can be painful when pressed. Sometimes, several warts cluster together: these are known as mosaic warts.
Periungual warts appear around the nails in the form of thickened skin.
Some warts go away on their own, while others can remain for a long time. They are mainly a cosmetic nuisance. There are several solutions to make them disappear, such as over-the-counter treatments called verrucides. In the case of genital warts, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
