This medication contains an antihistamine of the phenothiazine family. It has antitussive and sedative properties.

It is used in the symptomatic treatment of dry coughs, especially those that occur at night.

This medicine is best taken at the time of coughing, spacing out the doses by at least 4 hours. Evening doses should be preferred because of the risk of drowsiness.

Usual dosage

    • Adult and child over 40 kg (over 12 years of age): 1 10 ml measuring cup, 4 times daily.
    • Children from 30 to 40 kg (about 10 to 12 years): 1 measuring cup of 10 ml, 3 or 4 times a day.
    • Children from 20 to 30 kg (about 6 to 10 years): 1 x 10 ml measuring cup, 2 or 3 times a day.
    • Child from 12 to 20 kg (about 2 to 6 years): 1 measuring cup with 5 ml, 2 or 3 times a day. <

This medicine is not suitable for the treatment of cough, which is a normal defense mechanism of the body allowing the evacuation of mucus present in the bronchi.

Coughing is a symptom that can reveal many diseases (allergy, heart disease, lung disease, digestive disease ...): consult your doctor if it persists more than a few days.

Precautions are necessary in cases of heart disease, epilepsy, liver failure, renal failure and in the elderly, especially in cases of chronic constipation, prostate adenoma, tendency to dizziness or low blood pressure.

Oxomemazine, like other phenothiazine drugs, may cause photosensitization reactions; avoid exposure to the sun during treatment.

Avoid alcoholic beverages: increased risk of drowsiness.

This medication may cause drowsiness, sometimes severe in some people. This drowsiness may be increased by alcohol or other sedative drugs. Driving and operating dangerous machinery is strongly discouraged especially during the first hours after taking this medication.

Contraindications

This medication should not be used in the following cases:

  • history of agranulocytosis,
  • risk of angle-closure glaucoma,
  • risk of urine blockage due to prostate adenoma,
  • children under 2 years of age.

Drug interactions

This medicine should not be combined with medicines containing cabergoline or quinagolide: risk of cancellation of their effects.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medication with atropine or sedative effects (tranquillisers, sleeping pills, certain cough or pain medications containing opiates, antidepressants, neuroleptics...).

Pregnancy

Pregnancy:

The effect of this medication during pregnancy is not well known: only your doctor can assess the possible risk of its use in your case.

If taken at the end of pregnancy, monitoring of the newborn may be necessary.

Breastfeeding:

The data currently available do not allow to know if this drug passes into breast milk: as a precautionary measure, it is not recommended during breastfeeding.

Undesirable effects

Drowsiness.

Atropine effects: dry mouth, accommodation disorders, blockage of urine, constipation, palpitations.

Orthostatic hypotension, dizziness.

Tremor, poor coordination of movements.

Agitation, confusion of ideas.

Allergic reaction, photosensitization.

Abnormal blood count.
