Description and functioning of Gaviscon oral suspension bottle 250 ml

This stomach medicine is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is characterized by heartburn, acid reflux and heartburn.

Gaviscon contains as active ingredients sodium alginate (5%) and sodium bicarbonate (2.67%). The excipients are calcium carbonate, carbomer (974 P), sodium saccharin, fennel flavour, erythrosine (E127), sodium hydroxide, propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), purified water

Gaviscon forms a gel on contact with the acidic liquid of the stomach, which floats above the gastric contents, forming a physical barrier that prevents the contents from flowing back into the esophagus. In case of severe reflux, if there is still an upward movement, it is the gel that will interpose itself between the esophageal wall and the gastric contents.

Its alkaline pH will thus replace the acid pH, but only at the level of the cardia (high closing of the stomach) without modifying the acid pH of the stomach necessary to a good digestion.

Dosage and Directions for use Gaviscon drinkable suspension bottle 250 ml

The recommended dosage of Gaviscon drinkable suspension is 2 teaspoons (10 ml) 3 times a day after the main meals and in the evening at bedtime.

In case of severe regurgitation, it is possible to double this dosage. The treatment should not be taken for more than 7 days without medical advice.

A delay of 2 hours must be respected for the taking of other medicines. An opened bottle can only be kept for 3 months.

Precautions of use

This medicine for the stomach can be taken by the pregnant or breast-feeding woman. As for all medicines, it is nevertheless preferable to seek medical advice during these particular periods.

Do not take Gaviscon if you are allergic to any of its components.

The dose of 2 teaspoons of Gaviscon brings you 145 mg of sodium, it is thus necessary to take into account this parameter in the event of low sodium diet or in the event of cardiac insufficiency.

This same dose also brings 160 mg of calcium carbonate: to be taken into account in case of serious disease affecting the kidneys.
