Capstar 11.4 mg for small dogs tablets are used to treatflea infestations in small dogs. Theeffect on fleas is visible 15 to 30 minutes after administration to the animal.
Box of 6 tablets
Capstar 11.4 mg small dog 6 anti-flea tablets is a treatment for flea infestations.
Theeffect on fleas is visible 15 to 30 minutes after administration to the animal.
Efficacy against fleas is 95 to 100% within 6 hours of administration and 100% within 24 hours, with no residual activity.
Pharmacodynamic properties:
The active ingredient nitenpyram belongs to the neonicotinoid class.
It binds to and inhibits insect-specific nicotinic cholinergic receptors. It interrupts nerve conduction in adult fleas, leading to their death. Nitenpyram does not inhibit acetylcholinesterase.
The effect on fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) is visible 15 to 30 minutes after administration to the host animal. This coincides with the fleas' first blood meal, when the effective blood concentration of the drug is reached. Efficacy against fleas is 95-100% within 6 hours of administration and 100% within 24 hours, with no residual activity.
Pharmacokinetic characteristics:
Following oral administration to cats and dogs, nitenpyram is rapidly absorbed by more than 90%. Food intake has no influence on nitenpyram absorption in dogs, but slightly delays Tmax in cats, without affecting other pharmacokinetic parameters or efficacy. Maximum blood concentration is reached in 30 to 120 minutes in fasting dogs and cats.
Elimination half-life is 4 hours in dogs and 8 hours in cats. Over 90% is excreted in the urine, within one day in dogs and two days in cats, mainly in unchanged form.
Undesirable effects (frequency and severity):
During the first hour after administration, more intense itching may occur in the host animal. This is due to the fleas' reaction to the product.
In very rare cases, cats may experience transient signs of hyperactivity.
Tablets may be taken with or without food.
Do not use on animals under 4 weeks of age or weighing less than 1 kg.
Capstar small dog dosage
The minimum effective dose is 1 mg/kg, with the following recommendations:
one tablet should be given to cats and small dogs weighing from 1 kg to 11 kg when flea infestation is identified.
Treatment frequency depends on the degree of infestation. In the case of severe infestation, it may be necessary to treat animals every day or every other day until all fleas have been eliminated. Treatment can be repeated if fleas reappear. Do not administer more than one treatment per day.
Tablets should be administered orally, with or without food. To facilitate administration, the tablets can be hidden in a small amount of food just before taking.
The product has no residual activity. To prevent re-infestation, we recommend combining it with a drug that treats immature flea stages.
The veterinarian can establish an appropriate treatment program.
Route of administration: Oral.
Overdose (symptoms, emergency treatment, antidotes):
Nitenpyram is well tolerated by cats and dogs. An overdose of up to 50 mg/kg in cats and 70 mg/kg in dogs is asymptomatic.
Side effects such as salivation, nausea, loose stools, convulsions or decreased activity may be observed at higher dosages, with severity increasing with dose. Symptoms disappear rapidly, and return to normal within 24 hours, thanks to the rapid elimination of nitenpyram.
No clinically significant adverse effects have been observed after daily administration for 6 months in dogs and cats.
Use during pregnancy, lactation and egg-laying:
Nitenpyram may be administered to pregnant or lactating females.
Studies in laboratory animals (rats and rabbits) have shown no evidence of teratogenic or fetotoxic effects. The safety of the product has been demonstrated in pregnant and lactating cats and bitches.
Drug and other interactions:
Not known.
No adverse effects have been observed with nitenpyram and other veterinary drugs, such as commonly used flea products, anthelmintics, vaccines or antibiotics.
Special storage precautions as appropriate:
Do not store above 25°C.
