All synovial joints, and especially the weight-bearing joints, contain viscoelastic sodium hyaluronate (sodium hyaluronate = a natural component of synovial fluid). This viscoelastic substance acts as a lubricant and also absorbs shocks, which allows us to move without joint pain. In patients with degenerative joint damage (osteoarthritis), it is clear that this viscoelasticity of the synovial fluid is compromised or even lost. This results in a significant (and especially severe) increase in mechanical stress on the joint, with inevitable and significant degeneration of the articular cartilage (the joint becomes painful, stiff and difficult to move). Intra-articular injection of sodium hyaluronate (sodium hyaluronate) of a very high degree of purity (and therefore with very good viscoelastic characteristics) can improve the quality of synovial fluids. The lubricating and shock-absorbing characteristics of this product mean that pain is reduced and mobility can be improved. The results obtained can be maintained for several months after a course of five intra-articular injections.
