Smectalia is a short-term treatment for acute diarrhoea in adults and children over the age of 15. It is a treatment to be taken in addition to dietary measures.

What is the dose of Smectalia?

• The dosage is 1 sachet and then 1 sachet after each new unformed stool, without exceeding 6 sachets per day.
• The maximum duration of treatment is 3 days.

Do not try to manage the symptoms yourself and consult your doctor quickly if :

• Diarrhea is accompanied by high fever, chills or repeated vomiting.
• Your stools contain mucus and/or blood.
• Your diarrhoea is accompanied by a sudden weight loss (more than 2kg).
• The diarrhea occurs during or after antibiotic treatment.
• You have a vulnerable condition: known heart valve disease, treatment that reduces your body's immune defences (immunosuppressive treatment or chemotherapy in progress).
• You have recently travelled to a tropical country.
• You are over 75 years of age or over 65 years of age and are already being treated for other diseases.

Do not continue treatment for diarrhoea on your own and consult your doctor if :

• Your symptoms do not improve or get worse after two days of treatment.
• You feel very thirsty, tired or have a dry tongue (a sign of dehydration). It is imperative that you SEEK MEDICAL CARE QUICKLY.
• Diarrhoea recurs frequently or you notice alternating episodes of diarrhoea and constipation.

• Do not exceed 6 sachets per day. Do not take Smectalia for more than 3 days.
• Smectalia is not indicated for people who are allergic to diosmectite or to any of the excipients present: glucose monohydrate, sodium saccharin, orange flavour (maltodextrin, sucrose, gum arabic (E414), mono- and diacetyl tartaric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids (E472e), silicon dioxide (E551), orange flavour), vanilla flavour (maltodextrin, sucrose, glyceryl triacetate (E1518), silicon dioxide (E551), ethyl alcohol, soya lecithin (E322), vanilla flavour)
• Smectalia is not recommended for people with fructose intolerance, glucose and galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase/isomaltase deficiency (serious hereditary anomalies).
• Smectalia is a treatment to be taken in addition to dietary measures.
• Smectalia should be taken at a distance from meals and other medications you normally take.
• Certain side effects, such as constipation, may occur during treatment with Smectalia
• Use with caution if you have a history of severe chronic constipation.
